Ripon 20-8 Moortown
Moortown travelled to Ripon for their first away match of the season, looking to put on a better performance than the previous week against West Leeds. The new look Moortown team which includes a mixture of both experience and youth, as a number of Colts players have now been added to the 1st team squad this season.
The match began in disappointing fashion as Moortown found themselves 5-0 down within the first 5 minutes as the Ripon full back was driven over the line to score.
Moortown reorganised and steadily worked their way back into the game and reduced the deficit to 5-3 when Jack Lewis converted a penalty as Ripon had infringed at the breakdown.
As the half progressed, Moortown were being harshly penalised consistently by the referee, thus putting themselves under unnecessary pressure. These adjudged infringements led to flanker Tim Hockin receiving an unfortunate yellow card. Ripon capitalised on their one man advantage to extend their lead through a penalty to lead 8-3 and quickly followed this by scoring their second try of the match. Half time 13-3
The second half started poorly as Moortown gifted Ripon their 3rd try almost immediately. A poor kick was gathered by the full back who ran in under the posts to score his second try of the match. The conversion was added to extend the lead to 20-3.
This seemed to galvanise Moortown and the remainder of the game was played within Ripon’s half. Moortown looked to play with more structure and were challenging the Ripon defensive line. A number of try scoring chances were squandered as Moortown looked to reduce the deficit.
Moortown began to dominate the set plays and this gave them a good platform to mount their attacks. Moortown were rewarded for the efforts when replacement wing Mark Wilkinson finished off a well worked move to score. The conversion was missed. 20-8
Moortown continued to play expansively however time eventually ran out and as the referee’s whistle blew Ripon held on to win by 20-8.
Moortown will be looking to get campaign up and running this Saturday as they host West Park Leeds. Kick off 3pm
